Donald D. Day

Donald David Day, 90, of Kearney, Nebraska, went to meet his heavenly father peacefully on October 27, 2022. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney, Nebraska. He will be cremated and buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brookpark, Ohio. A Mass of Christian burial will be held in Ohio. Donald was born on January 19, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio to George and Marie (Schmidt) Day. He graduated from West Tech High School in January of 1950, Case Institute of Technology (BS Metallurgical Engineering) June of 1954 and University of Akron (MS Management) June of 1975. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1955 and served in Germany from 1957-1958 and was honorably discharged in December of 1958. On December 15, 1958, he married Elsie Conrad in Coburg, Germany and established their home in Cleveland, Ohio. His wife and son were killed in an auto accident on November 1, 1963. He was in recovery for six months and returned to work full time in late May of 1964. On May 29, 1965 Donald married Christine Bargiel at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Cleveland, Ohio. They moved to and lived in Fairlawn, Ohio from 1968-1988 and then to La Porte, Indiana from 1988-2011. After Christine’s death in 1997 due to an early childhood brain tumor, Donald remained in LaPorte until he joined his son Damon Day in late August 2011. Among his many activities that added many years to his life in Kearney were the Loper Baseball team, Peterson Senior Activity Center, Tehama Shrine (Hastings NE), Ft. Kearney Shrine Club, Rob Morris Lodge # 46 A.F. and A.M., Nebraska Woodcarvers, and his many friends scattered throughout the Kearney area. He leaves to mourn his four children, daughter Krista Zoladz (Dennis) of Chesterton, Indiana, son David Day (Becky) of Niceville, Florida, son Dan Day (Samantha) of Cleveland, Ohio, and son Damon Day (Jessica) of Kearney, Nebraska. Seven Grandchildren- Granddaughters- Emily (Josh) Little, Lauren, Jessica, Riley, Kara, Emma, and Grandson, Cody Jon Day. His beloved Kathy Stubbs, Kearney, Nebraska, who shared our lives to live, laugh, love, travel and care for each other and extend our life together. He is preceded in death by his special friends, Silvia Kinola (Michigan City, Indiana) and Cousin, Agnes Cashmir (Berea, Ohio). In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Donald Day Memorial Scholarship Fund which will go to help baseball players from the Central Nebraska area fulfill their baseball dreams.
