Jim Hellman

Jim Hellman, 77 Kearney resident Jim Hellman, 77, of Kearney died Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Colling celebrating. There will be no visitation. Jim was born September 1, 1939 in Grand Island Nebraska. He received his education from Kearney High School, graduating in 1957. Jim studied at UNK and graduated from Barnes Business College. On February 27, 1960, Jim was united in marriage to Marlene Brown in Kearney, Nebraska and they just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. He was an entrepreneur and an owner of several businesses. He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts serving as a pack leader and a Scoutmaster for many years. Jim served on the board of Overland Trails District and was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, and an ordained deacon. He was also an active member of the community and was involved in several civic organizations. He was president of Optimist International, chairman of the United Fund Campaign, a Nebraska Diplomat, and an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. In addition, he coached all of his sons in youth football and basketball. Jim enjoyed traveling, boating, and spending time at the Johnson Lake cabin with his family. His wife Marlene, children, grandchildren, and extended Hellman and Brown families were the joys of his life. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Hellman of Kearney; sons Mark (Tammie) Hellman of Kearney; Ryan (Carrie) Hellman of Denver; J.J. (Jill) Hellman of Denver; Rhonda Hellman Kearney; grandchildren Chelsea Ritchie, Lacey, Austin, and Dalton Hellman, Colton, Carson, and Reagan Hellman, Grace and Harrison Hellman; great grandchildren, Tristan, Stella, Weston and Blaklee; brothers and sisters Jackie (Kenneth) Main of Sutherland, NE, Jan (Greg) Daake of Kearney, Joel (Mary Lou) Hellman of Lake Ozark, MO; Joan (Tom)Ross of Prior Lake, MN, Jerry (Tami) Hellman of Kearney, Jane (Pat) Stinson of Billings, MT and Julie (Ray) Smith of Pacific City, OR; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Jim was proceeded in death by his parents; brother Jon Hellman, sister Jill Nickel, and great grandchildren, Addelyn and Paisley Ritchie.
