Betty Y. Lund

Betty Yvonne (Jenkins) Lund, 84 of Kearney passed to her eternal home Monday, December 30, 2019 at her home. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday January 3, 2019 at First Lutheran Church, 3315 Avenue G, Kearney, NE. in Kearney. The Rev. Dr. Michelle Holley Carlson and Rev. Dr. Rick Carlson will officiate. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Betty was born January 3, 1935 to Ivor and Mabel (Petersen) Jenkins in Wayne County, NE. She met the love of her life, Douglas Lund, at Nebraska Wesleyan University campus while crossing paths on the steps of Old Main. They were married at Bethany Christian Church in Lincoln, NE on June 7, 1958. Because of Betty’s love for children, she became an elementary teacher for Murdock Elementary. After two years of teaching she gave birth to her son, Scot, on May 24, 1960. On May 25,1962, her daughter, Susie, was born and completed their family. In the fall of 1962, Doug and Betty moved to Kearney where Doug began his career teaching Biology for Kearney State College. The community of Kearney was never the same. Betty never knew a stranger. She was the biggest fan of anything and everything her husband and two children were involved in. You could find her in numerous organizations in the community including First Lutheran Church, Faculty Wives, PEO (Chapter GG), Bridge Club, Red Hat Club, Potluck group, Birthday group and let’s not forget The Betty Club. Betty never knew a stranger. Whether she met you on the street, through a friend or during Kearney State enrollment she would remember your name and face forever. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 61 years, Douglas Lund of Kearney; son, Scot (Bev) Lund of Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Susan (Lund) Luxford of Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren, Lucas Luxford of Lincoln, NE, Kiley (Adam) Willis of Hutchinson, KS, Lauren (David) Krehbiel of Pretty Prairie, KS and Lyndsey (Jordan) Haag of Hickman, NE; seven great grandchildren, Cayden, Scarlett, Selah, Marlene, Gunnar, Mabel, Meryl; brother, Dean (Sylvia) Jenkins; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and son-in-law, William (Bill) Luxford. Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church or to Kearney Area Animal Shelter.
