Delbert C. Johnson

Delbert C. Johnson, 90, of Kearney, died Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Mother Hull Home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Thursday, January 18, 2018 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home. The Reverend Dean Pofahl will officiate. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Delbert Curtis Johnson was born on January 11, 1928 in Shelton, Nebraska to Earl J. and Marguriette M. (Fieldgrove) Johnson. He grew up in Gibbon and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1947. Delbert entered the United States Army on October 17, 1950 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on September 13, 1952. Following his discharge, he returned to Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Pauline L. Wood on July 10, 1953 in Kearney. The couple made their home in Gibbon before moving to Wood River where they lived for 41 years. In 2002 they moved to Kearney. Other than the two years he served in the Army, Delbert was a farmer his entire life. Delbert was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Wood River, the American Legion and the Veterans Of Foreign Wars. He loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing, ice fishing and mastering his skill of mowing ditches. Delbert loved Poptarts, one for his breakfast and another for his afternoon snack. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Pauline Johnson of Kearney; three daughters, Nancy Walker and husband Dean of Hastings, Connie Kirkpatrick and husband Roger of Alda and Mary Pitcher and husband Dave of Kearney; a son, Mark Johnson of Wood River; a brother-in-law, Robert Wood and wife JoAnn of San Jose, CA; 12 grandchildren, Robin Johnson and husband Shawn, Ron Walker, Lena Walker and fiancé Tony Massing, Alison Bitner, Darrell Walker, Marion Kuil and husband Chad, Justin Valasek and wife Jessie, Chase Valasek and wife Shannon, Curtis Pitcher and wife Rachel, Mariah Johnson, Kenneth Kirkpatrick and wife Melissa and Whitney Dethloff and husband Zac; 33 great grandchildren, Christian, Devon, Adrian, Taylor, Bretton, Lillian, Katilyn, Sawyer, Makayla, Carrie, Briana, Paige, Hunter, Sophia, Royce, Jazmin, Sarah, Angel, Xander, Lex, Preston, Ashlyn, Cameron, Cain, Skyler, Kallie, Carson, Hallie, James, Kennedy, Kelsey, Lorelei and Austin; and three great great grandchildren, Bentley, Katrina and Mariah. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Everett Johnson and Donald Johnson; two sisters, Belva Jewett and Earlene Huffman; a brother-in-law, Charles Wood; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Weston.
