Dorothy A. Carmann, 96, formerly of Riverdale, died Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst with Vicar William Heermann and Rev. Dean Hanson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M., Wednesday at the O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Interment will be in the Riverdale Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home of Kearney. Dorothy was born June 12, 1916 in Kearney to Alexander and Evalena (Henderson) Juhl. She graduated from Amherst High School in 1933 and attended Normal School at Kearney State Teachers College before teaching at rural schools in the Sandhills south of Mullen and Districts 90 and 80 near Amherst. She was united in marriage to Rudolf Carmann in Peake St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Riverdale on May 24, 1936. The couple farmed their entire married life north of Riverdale with their family. Her husband preceded her in death on May 24, 1977. Since 1954, Dorothy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst, NE, and was active in several church organizations including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Ladies Aid, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and quilting groups. She greatly enjoyed extending hospitality through meals with family and friends in her home and by sharing her baked pies, cakes, brownies, and cookies. She had a passion for writing letters and articles, playing piano, singing songs and hymns, visiting the elderly, and giving her quilts for baby and wedding gifts She is survived by her sons, Glen M. Carmann of Riverdale, Kenneth W. and wife Kathy Carmann of Centennial, CO, and Larry M. Carmann and fiancee Elaine Hibbeler of Grand Island; daughters, Dorene R. Carmann of Hastings and Mary Ann and husband John Levi of Green Valley, AZ; sister-in-law, Wilma Carmann of Kearney; grandchildren; Lloyd Modlin Jr., Tiffany Modlin, Troy Carmann, Kami Carmann Snyder, Julie Carmann Herickhoff and Tim Carmann; great grandchildren; Ryan and Tyler Bradshaw, Jacob Macey, Damon Modlin, Natasha Crites, Grant and Westin Carmann, twins Sam and Lucy Snyder and Paige Herickhoff; five great great grandchildren; Chase and Tavia Crites, Zane Modlin, Ashlynn Henley and Brody Bradshaw; plus several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband; both parents; brothers, Howard Juhl, Harold Juhl; sisters, Ramona Hadwiger, Virginia Nelson, and Dolores Scott; and daughter-in-law Marcia Carmann.
