Erika V. Moxley

Erika V. Moxley, beloved mother, grandmother (Granny), great-grandmother, and retired Sergeant Major (SGM) of the US Army Reserve, passed away on July 21, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, on May 17, 1942, to Friedrich Kureija and Elisabeth Vogler. Erika embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned continents and touched countless lives. Erika’s life was marked by service and creativity. After immigrating to the United States on December 31, 1963, she proudly served in the US Army Reserve, enlisting in 1974 and achieving the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major before retiring with honor in 2002. Her military career as an Active Duty Reservist took her across the globe, with one of her fondest postings being in Korea. Her dedication and leadership inspired all who served alongside her. Beyond her military duties, Erika had a passion for quilting and crafting handmade cards, forming lifelong bonds with many quilting friends. Her creations were not just art but cherished gifts that reflected her warmth and creativity. Many will remember her for the care and detail she put into each piece, making them true treasures for family and friends. Erika actively participated in numerous quilting guilds and various organizations, including The American Legion, The Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Sisters of the Sword, and The Red Hat Society, among others. Family was central to Erika’s life, and she cherished being called "Granny". She found immense joy in attending her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities, from sports events to school performances. Her unwavering support and presence were a source of strength and love for her family over the years. Erika also leaves behind her beloved companion, Hot Rod, a dachshund who brought her immense joy and comfort. Their bond was a source of companionship and happiness throughout her life. Erika’s legacy of kindness, strength, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and dedication that will continue to inspire generations to come. She is preceded in death by her son, Howard T. Moxley. Erika’s legacy of service, creativity, and love will be carried on by her daughter Heidi L. Gilbert, daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Bruce Schutte, daughter-in-law Kimberly Moxley, grandsons Thomas (Katie) Schutte, Georg Schutte, Trévon Gilbert, and Tanner Moxley, and great-grandchildren Shayda, Greer, and Emrick Schutte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Patriot Paws in memory of Erika, whose life was defined by service and compassion. A memorial service to celebrate Erika's life will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE, on July 29, 2024, at 1 pm, with a Celebration of Life to follow at The American Legion in Bartley, NE, at 5 pm. All who knew and loved her are invited to attend and share in honoring her remarkable journey. Erika, your legacy of love and dedication will forever be cherished and remembered. Rest in peace, knowing your impact on this world will never fade and will live on through the love your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have for you.
