Gary Hubbard

Gary Lee Hubbard, 78 of Elm Creek, died Thursday July 5, 2012 at his residence. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Elm Creek. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Interment will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Elm Creek. Military honors at graveside will be conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 316 of Elm Creek. Visitation will be 5-7pm, Sunday at the church with a Prayer Vigil to follow at 7 PM. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home of Kearney and Elm Creek is in charge of arrangements. He was born November 29, 1933 in Lexington to Morace and Carmel (Bryan) Hubbard. He grew up in Lexington and Overton, and graduated from Elm Creek High School. He entered the Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged after four years. Gary was united in marriage to Shirley Moles on March 6, 1954. They resided in Elm Creek most of their married life. He was employed by the Overton Public School, was a self-employed farmer and worked for Cash-Wa Distributing. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. Gary was fondly called "Big Daddy" by family members and friends. He particularly enjoyed being a school bus driver. "Big Daddy" had a nickname for each grandchild. He enjoyed spending time fishing with and going to the grandkids' many activities. He also looked forward to coffee time with the guys and playing horseshoes. Gary is survived by his wife, Shirley of Elm Creek; children, Gary Mike Hubbard and wife Marian of Elm Creek, Jeff Hubbard and wife Lana of Elm Creek, Dawn Schneider and husband Dennis of O'Neill, Lisa Marshall and husband Larry of Bertrand, Tia Van Matre and husband Todd of Gibbon, Shawn Hubbard and wife Sandy of Dickens, Harold Hubbard and wife Darla of Elm Creek, Neal Hubbard and wife Tracy of Elm Creek, Heather Anderson of Kearney, April Hubbard of Elm Creek, Anastasia Benson and husband Craig of Castle Rock, CO, and Tara McCormick and husband John of Andover, MA; 55 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold Hubbard of Arizona and Dennis Hubbard of California; and step-sister, Marijean Methe and husband Gene of Kearney. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol, one grandson, parents, stepmother, and father and mother-in-law.
