Genon V. Kerby

Genon Kerby, 83, of Kearney was called home to heaven on March 15th, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, located at 2407 W. 56th Street, with the Rev. Paul Colling officiating. Interment will follow at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home, at 4115 Avenue N, with a Vigil Service and Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family to establish an education scholarship fund on Genon’s behalf. She was born December 23rd, 1931 in Shelby, Nebraska to Tom and Vera (Boro) Micek. She grew up on the family farm north of Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School. On December 31st, 1951 she was united in marriage to Bob Kerby in Columbus, NE. Bob and Genon moved to their current acreage in Kearney in 1959. Genon taught school for 42 years and began her teaching career at the tender age of 16. She taught various grades in several country schools, with the majority of her teaching years spent in the Grand Island Public School system teaching 4th grade at Wasmer Elementary, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and had 50 plus hours, over her Master’s degree. She had an abundance of energy and a tremendous work ethic. Genon had a great love for music (mainly country) and played the guitar, piano, sang and yodeled. She loved animals of all types and would watch the deer and wild turkeys from her front window, but she was especially fond of her cats. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. We’re all going to miss… Great Grandma Gigi. Genon is survived by her husband Bob of Kearney, daughter Lori (Chris) Watters of Bettendorf, Iowa, and son Clint of Kearney. Grandchildren Valerie (Marcus) Wolfe of Papillion, Nebraska, Nick (Lucia) Watters of Vicenza, Italy and Richard Watters of Rolla, Missouri. Great grandchildren, Aurora and Audra Wolfe and Adriana Watters. Sister, Sharon (Ray) Sock of Genoa, Nebraska and several, nephews, nieces, many former students, fellow teachers and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a nephew.
