James H. Slater

James (Jim) Harvey Slater of rural Shelton, NE passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017 at his home. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017, 2:00pm, at the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery. Luncheon and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Gibbon American Legion following the service. Casual attire is requested. There will be no visitation. Memorials are requested to the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department. O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences and memories with Jim may be shared at www.osrfh.com. Jim was born on March 14, 1938 to Christian (Joe) Aljo and Edna May (Ramick) Slater at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, NE. Jim was raised in Holstein, Atlanta and Lowell areas and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1955. Jim married Shirley Irene Donaldson on February 16, 1958 at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, NE. Of this union, two children were born, Denise May and Michael Joe. Jim and Shirley lived their married life in Holdrege, Atlanta, Lowell, Gibbon and Shelton. Jim worked in many occupations during his life, which consisted of the Railroad, Slater Elevator in Atlanta, NE, Mark Randall Farm, Bill Bendfeldt Farm, Slater Farm, Rayburn Trucking, Garnet Rose Potato Farm, Slack Trucking, Larry Bailey Farm, Larry Puttergill Farm, Don Farrell Farm, Scoular, Big Flag in Gibbon, Missouri Valley Construction in Grand Island, and Yellow Freight in Kearney. Jim loved his outdoor life, whether it was from his trucking, farming, farm animals, camping, fishing, riding around the countryside and looking at the fields, or just sitting outside with his friends enjoying each other’s company. He was an avid pool player and enjoyed teaching his kids the game. He also enjoyed playing cards, playing golf later in life with his buddies, and coffee times with his Minden friends and the guys at the Oasis. Jim was a member of the Atlanta Methodist Church. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, in September 2008, his parents, an infant sister, Beverly Jane Slater and nephew, Wesley Slater. Jim is survived by his daughter and spouse, Denise and Larry Fenster of Shelton, son and spouse, Mike and Tina Slater of Gibbon. His grandson, Jason Glenn of Grand Island, granddaughter and spouse, Sarah and Trent Schrock of Funk, granddaughter and spouse, Nichole and Jon Ruyle of Kearney, granddaughter and spouse, Kristina and James Craft of Houston, granddaughter and spouse, Brittany and Jose Rosas of Lincoln. His great-grandchildren, Carson Glenn, Nikolas, Harley, Samuel and Shirley Schrock, Raegan and Kynlee Ruyle, Kaiser and Kora Craft. His brother and spouse, Robert (Bob) and Sandra Slater of Holdrege, brother and spouse, John (Jack) and Christine Slater of Atlanta.
