Jean Mitchell, 63 Elm Creek Resident Jean Mitchell, 63 of Elm Creek died May 12, 2011 at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Thursday at 10:30AM at the O’Brien - Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Elm Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7PM on Wednesday at the O’Brien -- Straatmaan Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Overton Golf Club or to the family for future designation. She was born March 24, 1948 in Orleans, Nebraska where she attended grade school. She moved to Elm Creek in 1960. She attended and graduated from Elm Creek Public School in 1966. On August 10, 1969 she married Jim Mitchell in Elm Creek. Survivors include, her husband; daughter Nicole Mitchell, Memphis, Tennessee; son, Trapper Mitchell, Platteville, WI; sister-in-law Barb Saum; brother-in-law Bill Mitchell and wife Lou; brother-in-law Bob Mitchell and wife Pat; sister-in-law Connie Olson and husband Bob; many nieces and nephews; many special friends including the cardgroup; golfing partner Shirley Davenport; and special friends and neighbors, Benny and Brenda Schroeder. After graduating high school, Jean worked at KHOL-TV station. After a short time in Frankfurt, Germany, she and her husband made their home in Elm Creek where she began working for the Kearney Hub. In 1990, Jean received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Kearney State College, and in 1992 received her Master of Science Degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. After receiving her degrees, she served as a Licensed Mental Health counselor for South Central Behavior Services before opening her private practice, Mitchell Counseling Services. When not at the office, she enjoyed spending hours in her flower gardens; working with her goldfish pond; playing rounds of golf; playing with her devoted cat Husker, slightly devoted adopted cat Sasha and her one grandkitty Winston, talking with her children and cheering on the Husker football team every Saturday. Jean was admitted to the Cancer Treatment Center in October where she quickly developed close bonds and friendships with many patients and caregivers; and continued to use her mental health training to support and encourage fellow patients to continue treatment. Memorials are suggested to the Overton Golf Course or to the family to be designated at a later date. If unable to attend the service, please join us if possible for lunch at 1PM at the Elm Creek Community Center.
