Maude M. Riggs

Maude M. Riggs, 92, of Elm Creek, died Monday, March 26, 2018 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital. Peacefully she entered eternal rest with her family present. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday at First Christian Church of Elm Creek. Pastor Scott Foster will officiate. Interment will be in the Elm Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Elm Creek. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Elm Creek. Condolences may be shared online at www.osrfh.com. Maude Marie Jones was born on May 13, 1925 at Bancroft, Kansas, the second child of Elmer Ellsworth and Matilda “Tilly” Mabel (Chapman) Jones. She grew up in Bancroft and Circleville, Kansas until moving to Winfield, Kansas at the age of nine. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1943. Following high school, she worked with the Civil Service at Strother Air Field. She was united in marriage to Clyde Vernon Riggs on May 8, 1947 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Elm Creek, Nebraska for 17 years and then Loomis, Nebraska for eight years. In 1972 they returned to Elm Creek. Maude worked for ADM (Archer Daniels Midland Co.) at Odessa from 1957 until 1964 and then Phelps County Welfare Office at Holdrege until 1971. She then worked for Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation for 19 years. Maude retired in May of 1990. Survivors include her children, Clyde William “Bill” Riggs of Elm Creek and Kathryn Marie Tropp and husband Ernie of Loomis; three grandchildren; Clayton Tropp and wife Kira of Bellevue, NE, Gayle Tropp of Sterling, CO and April Riggs of Bellevue, WA; two great-grandsons, Holden and Hunter Tropp of Bellevue, NE; two sisters, Lula Reed Cepel and husband Harold of Gibbon and Virginia McCoskey and husband Robert of Wichita, KS; a brother, Leslie Jones of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Lucille Doolittle of Norwich, KS; numerous nieces and nephews; her special family, the Alavis, her caregivers and a multitude of friends. Maude was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother Romena; her husband Clyde V. Riggs; an infant granddaughter, Marissa Tropp; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Riggs; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy Jones and husband Gilmer Nellis; brother Elmer Ellsworth Jones, Jr. and wives Gladys and Ruth; brother-in-law, Virgil Reed, sister-in-law, Cecelia Jones, sisters- in-law, Esther and Paul Kincheloe, Doris and Walter Ball, Helen and Lee Johnson, Harriet and Lee Thompson and brothers-in-law Robert and Mozel Riggs and Johnny Doolittle. Maude was known for her infections smile by her schoolmates, family, coworkers and friends. Maude and Clyde were noted for always walking hand-in-hand, ballroom dancing, traveling to all 50 states, Mexico and Canada.
