Michael Charles Grassmeyer

Michael Charles Grassmeyer, age 83, passed away on January 14th, 2026 at Homestead Assisted Living Facility, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on September 10, 1942, in Kearney, Nebraska, to Charles and Audrey (Cool) Grassmeyer. He attended Riverdale Schools, in 1956 they moved from Riverdale to Kearney and Mike would later graduate from Longfellow High School. Following graduation, Mike began a lifelong career with Don Wasson Tile Company, where he dedicated himself to tile work and floor finishing for over four decades. After 42 years of dedicated work, Mike retired in 2012 at the age of 70. While living and working in Kearney in the fall of 1961, Mike met the love of his life, Judy Kay Staples. The two were united in marriage in August of 1963 in North Platte, Nebraska. From this union, three children were born: Michele (Miki), Melissa, and Chad. Mike enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He loved woodworking, often taking an idea from one of his children or grandchildren and bringing it to life. He enjoyed attending drag racing events in Topeka, Kansas, daily trips to Menards, and cycling trips with his dear friend, Bob Kelly. Above all else, Mike’s greatest joy was attending and photographing his grandchildren’s activities and capturing cherished family gatherings. Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy Grassmeyer; his children, Miki (Randy) Nichols of Elm Creek, Nebraska, Melissa (Adam) Delp of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, and Chad (Kris) Grassmeyer of Kearney, Nebraska. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brandyn (Sara) Nichols of Eddyville, Nebraska; Shayna (Brad) Hanks of Holdrege, Nebraska; Lacey (Tim) Nichols of Elm Creek, Nebraska; Desirai (Jon) Weber of Holdrege, Nebraska; Coleden Grassmeyer, Brynn Grassmeyer, and Ansleigh Grassmeyer, all of Kearney, Nebraska; as well as many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Lynnda (Lloyd) Warford of Kearney, Nebraska, and Debbie (Roger) Wiseman of Nolensville, Tennessee, and his cousin Pat (Wayne) Woodside of Odessa, Nebraska. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Audrey Grassmeyer; his parents-in-law; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Homestead Assisted Living Facility and Brookestone Hospice for the care, compassion, and kindness shown to Mike during his final days. Mike will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his dedication and deep love for his wife and family, and his friendly nature. He never knew a stranger and could easily turn a simple topic into an hour-long conversation. Mike’s courageous battle with dementia taught many patience, compassion, and understanding. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. “We will remember for you.” A memorial service will be scheduled and held at a later date.
