Max Burroughs, 94, of Kearney passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2019 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Kayla Mangrich will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Kearney Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honors Team. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Max was born October 20, 1924 in Beatrice, NE to Edgar and Florence (Wills) Burroughs. He was raised in Beatrice, NE and was a graduate of Beatrice High School. Max attended Peru College before graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Structural Engineering. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from July 1, 1943 until his honorable discharge in June 30, 1946. On July 11, 1946, Max was united in marriage to Marnie. To This union four children were born; Nancy, Timothy, Julie and Jane. On June 23, 1978, Max married Barbara Nickel in Kearney, NE. Max was a longtime member of Fort Kearney Shrine, Kearney Lions Club, Kearney Elks Lodge #0984 and Rob Morris Lodge A.M. & A.F., where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Kearney First United Methodist Church. He started Max A. Burroughs Engineering in Kearney in 1977. Max served on the board of Olsson and Associates for several years, as well as, belonged to several professional organizations, including Sigma Phi Delta engineering fraternity Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara Burroughs of Kearney; children, Nancy Thompson and husband, Steve of Loveland, CO, Timothy Burroughs and wife, Jacque of Lakewood, CO, Julie Burroughs-Holm and husband, Rick Holm of Lincoln, Jane McCawley and husband, Ben of Chandler, AZ; stepchildren, Paula Tripp and husband, Emery of Trinidad, CO, Frank Nickel and wife, Cindy of Kearney, John Nickel of Glenwood Springs, CO, Joni Nickel of Gibbon, Jerry Nickel and wife, Ann of Sterling, CO, Patricia Alexander of Kearney and Edward Nickel and wife, Sherry of Okanogan, WA; 25 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brother, Bob Burroughs of Irvine, CA; half-brother, Dallas Burroughs of Beatrice; as well as, many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Max was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marnie Burroughs; stepmother, Salina Burroughs; brother, Edward Burroughs; half-sister, Janet Phillips.
