Geneva J. Kaps, 98 Elm Creek resident Geneva J. Kaps, 98 of Elm Creek passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Mt. Carmel Home in Kearney. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at the Elm Creek First Christian Church. Private family interment will be held prior to the service at Sumner Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Chapel in Elm Creek. Memorials are suggested to the Elm Creek First Christian Church. Geneva June (Tool) Kaps was born May 31, 1921 on a farm Northwest of Elm Creek, Nebraska to Raleigh R. and Gladys (Shelden) Tool. She attended country school District #94 and was a 1939 graduate of Elm Creek High School. On August 20, 1941, Geneva was united in marriage to Joseph Kaps in North Platte, NE. To this union two children were born; Joan Gibbons (Kaps) and Gary Lee Kaps. The couple made their home in Elm Creek where Geneva worked at Kearney Livestock and Olson’s Sale Barn in Kearney. She also cleaned the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church, along with several businesses and homes for many years. Geneva also owned and operated a café in Elm Creek. She retired from the Elm Creek Post Office in 1981 after 25 years of employment. She was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary #316, NARF, 8/40, As U R Club and the West Side Club, as well as the First Christian Church, where she was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship since 1956. She came to reside at Mt. Carmel Home in 2014, where she enjoyed wonderful and loving care. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Gary Kaps and wife, Linda of Arizona; daughter, Joan Gibbons and husband, Clark of Estes Park, CO; grandchildren, Christian Lee Gibbons and wife, Lisa of Missouri, Kristen Kaps-Smith and husband, Aaron of Arizona and Michelle Gibbons and husband, Sean Dougherty of Colorado; 5 great grandchildren, Noah, Ava, Aiden and Emerson Gibbons of Missouri and Abigail Karen Sue Smith of Arizona; as well as many extended relatives and friends. Geneva loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Kaps; brother, Melvin Tool.
