Ollie L. Valentine

Ollie L. Valentine Kearney Resident Ollie Valentine, 95 of Kearney, died Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial in Kearney. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 19 at the Kearney First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melody Adams will officiate. Inurnment will follow at the Kearney Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 52 and VFW Post 759 in conjunction with the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team. The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the ARC of Buffalo County or Kearney First United Methodist Church. Condolences may be shared online at www.osrfh.com. Ollie Lynn Valentine was born November 30, 1922 in Arthur County, Nebraska to Lynn Bryan and Orpha Bell (Shaw) Valentine. He received his education from a country school near Arthur County. Ollie was united in marriage to Lauretta Mae McClain on June 8, 1947 and to this union four children were born: Linda, Joy, Jackie and Jerri. Ollie worked as a ranch hand for 11 years before he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country in World War II and was honorably discharged. One of the highlights of Ollie’s life was when he was able to attend the Honor Flight. Following his time in the service, Ollie was employed as a State of Nebraska Brand Inspector for 21 years, worked for a livestock hauling service and was a partner in the Kearney Sale Barn from 1964 to 1984. Ollie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. Ollie and his wife, Lauretta were long term officers and supporters of the ARC of Buffalo County, an organization supporting individuals with special needs. He enjoyed riding and breaking horses, hunting and fishing. Ollie loved to play cards and cribbage. In his later years, Ollie also enjoyed audiobooks. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lauretta Valentine of Kearney; his children Linda Brott and her significant other, Irvin “Brub” Dixon of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Joy Slaughter and her husband, David of Kearney, Jackie Hays and her husband, David of The Villages, Florida and Jerri Lynn Valentine of Kearney; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister Velma Patchen of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Carolyn McClain of North Platte, Nebraska and Nadine Chandler of Paxton, Nebraska, Evelyn Correl and her husband, Clarence of Gering, Nebraska and Donna Daly and her husband, Leroy of Tryon, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ollie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leslie and his wife, Hazel, Cecil and his wife, Wilma and Virgil Valentine; brothers-in-law Eddie and Roy McClain and Bill Patchen; stepfather Lloyd Rice and parents-in-law Elmer and Eva McClain.
