Ruby Doris Flanders, 95 Shelton, NE resident Ruby D. Flanders, 95, of Shelton, died Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Home in Wood River, NE. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Shelton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melody Adams officiating. Interment will follow at the Shelton Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service all at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Shelton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Ruby was born May 24, 1920, in Coleridge, Nebraska to Daniel and Edith (Mercer) Calhoon. She grew up in Coleridge, graduating from Coleridge High School. On September 3, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donavon A. Flanders in Coleridge, NE. After working and framing near Laurel, Nebraska, they moved to rural Verdel, NE, in 1946. They lived in the Knox and Boyd County area along the Missouri River where they raised cattle and horses. Ruby and Don were excellent horsemen and spent a lot of time riding through the hills checking the cows and watering places. The biggest thing that bothered Ruby about the area was the rattlesnakes. She was terrified of them. Woe to any snake that crossed her path. When she was done, you would never recognize it as a snake again. In 1977, they retired and moved to Shelton, Nebraska Ruby was a member of the Shelton United Methodist Church since 1977 and a member of the Methodist Church for over 80 years. She was very active in Church Ladies Aide and other church activities. Ruby could always be counted on to give a helping hand to family members and friends. She especially enjoyed being around her grandchildren and attending sports and other activities. Ruby loved to play cards and spent many of her days and evenings playing with her many friends and neighbors. Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie (John) O’Dell of Springfield, MO, Karen (John) Scharff of Shelton, Judy (Doran) Burmood of Shelton; son, Gary (Janice) Flanders of Bristow, NE; grandchildren, Lance Burmood, Adam Burmood, April Scharff, Christopher Scharff, Cory Wells, Zack Scharff, Monica (Dodson) Wilson, Tanja (Flanders) Mitchell and Yvonne (Flanders) Harrington; 15 great grandchildren; several step grandsons & granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 1990; parents and her three brothers, Wilbur, Kelly and Harry.
