Vickie R. Wiens

Vickie R. Wiens, 73, of Bayard, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2026 at East Woodlawn Cemetery in Johnstown, NE. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services. Vickie Rae (Goochey Harig) Wiens was born on May 20, 1953, in Ainsworth NE to Alvin and Burnice (Esterly) Goochey. She grew up on the family ranch southwest of Johnstown and attended Johnstown Grade School, then graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1971. In her younger years, she was a member of the Johnstown Lucky Lassie’s 4-H Club where she learned to sew and cook, along with other life skills, and received many top ribbons on her projects, with some of them going on to the state level. Vickie was always good at everything she put her hand to and enjoyed sharing her talents with others. She enjoyed playing the piano and played for her church as well as playing for many weddings and funerals. In high school she was active in thespians, pep club, French club, choir and was a member of the national honor society. On January 14th, 1973, Vickie married Michael Harig, and to this union a son, Brian Shane Harig, was born. After their divorce she moved to Colorado Springs CO to attend the Nazarene Bible College. While there she met Tom Wiens and they married on June 8, 1980. In the summer of 1982, they moved to Bayard NE and lived in the panhandle area until her passing. During those years she started a craft business where she traveled throughout the state attending craft shows and eventually opened her own craft shop in Bridgeport NE. Vickie enjoyed sewing and quilting, but it was the quilting that she really loved. Her favorite color was purple, which was evident in many of the quilts she made. As part of her love for quilting, she joined the Panhandle Quilt Guild and kept their yearbook for many years. Vickie loved flowers and had them abundantly in her yard, but she also enjoyed going for rides and looking at the flowers and landscaping in other’s yards. If there were anything Vickie would want to be remembered for, it would be her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She came to know Him as a young child, and she not only knew Him as her Savior, but as her friend. She had a strong faith that not only carried her through many challenges, but it gave her hope in her life and the assurance of her future. She was always there for others, looking to Gods word for answers and guidance. Her greatest desires were to serve Him, and that others might also come to know Him as she did. Vickie was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister Ella Mae Arent, and brother Neil Runolfson. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Tom Wiens, son Brian (Katy) Harig, grand-daughters Ana and Ivy Harig, brothers Calvin (Sherry) Goochey, Rick (Connie) Goochey, sister LaVada (Terry) McGill, along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.
